Recycling success at the LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort

Good environmental practice and sustainability are of utmost importance to the management team, and it works closely with Thames Valley-based Grundon Waste Management, who take care of waste management and recycling for both the Resort and hotel.
The partnership has seen the LEGOLAND Windsor Resort achieve zero waste to landfill and its commitment has been such that it is a winner of the Green Progress Award for outstanding performance in environmental management in the annual Thames Valley Business Awards.
Paul Howard, Resort Facilities Manager, said at the time: “We were thrilled that our efforts to improve sustainability and waste management have been rewarded. The work between Grundon and the LEGOLAND Windsor Resort means together we have been able to make a real difference, especially in achieving our goal of diverting all our waste away from landfill.”
In 2011, just 148 tonnes of waste was recycled but by 2015, the figure was 534.88 tonnes and the upward trend is continuing. On average, half of waste is now separated and recycled, while remaining waste which cannot be recycled or recovered is sent to Energy from Waste, where it generates renewable electricity for export to the National Grid.
Grundon’s Jack Yarrow, who works with the LEGOLAND Windsor team, said: “It’s clear everyone has done a fantastic job in helping to raise the profile of waste management and recycling across the Resort. The fact that Resort won this award proves they are on the right track and we look forward to continuing to work with them as they set new goals for the future.”
Other energy efficiency measures which helped contribute to the Resort’s success have been an ongoing programme to phase in energy efficient LED lighting and a water conservation project.
