Preparing for a Christmas BRICKTACULAR

Building an awesome LEGO Santa's Grotto

This Christmas, visitors to LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Manchester’s Bricktacular event can meet LEGO® Santa, Take part in a scavenger hunt in their winter wonderland themed MINILAND®, build a Cool Decoration and journey to LEGO® Santa’s Grotto this December. Whoa!

Mini-builders can even write a letter to LEGO® Santa and receive a special reply in the post, before heading into the LEGO brick Grotto to have their photo taken with the brick man himself and get an awesome gift!

But just how do you get ready for a LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Christmas Bricktacular if you’re a Master Model Builder? James Windle from LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Manchester tells all.

"First, you have to give the entire attraction a new festive theme by creating lots of new LEGO builds. The theming extends into the LEGO retail shop as well, so this year I created little LEGO Christmas elves to hold signage – I even added a Santa hat to LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Manchester’s massive Hagrid build, which took me a whole day to build!

For the first time, LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Manchester has a Santa’s Grotto, where mini-builders can write a letter to Santa in the Grotto and have a chance to meet our LEGO Santa for a picture. As the Master Model Builder, I was tasked with creating the theming for Grotto. I started with several massive LEGO mosaic walls which took a week of design, planning and build time.

I also made LEGO cookies and milk for Santa, carrots for his reindeer as well as lots of snowballs and Christmas decorations. The path to the Grotto had 40 DUPLO candy canes that needed to be designed and built, requiring 6,000 red and white DUPLO bricks - so no one could miss it!

Mililand had a full Christmas makeover with snow, snow, snow everywhere and new scenes for our guests to discover in the BRICKTACULAR Scavenger Hunt - including new Minifigures skiing and a full Christmas market.

There is even more Christmas fun for visitors too, with build challenges asking for the best Christmas creations out of the extra 10,000 Christmas coloured bricks in our brick pits, so LEGO lovers can have a go at building LEGO snowmen, gingerbread men and Christmas trees!”
