Merlin’s Magic Wand and Dreams Come True Make a Splash with New SEA LIFE Sensory Space at Blackpool Hospital

Merlin’s Magic Wand, the official children’s charity partner of Merlin Entertainments and Dreams Come True charity cut the ribbon on a SEA LIFE-themed sensory space, at the Blackpool Teaching Hospital today.

Designed to provide a calming environment and sensory experience for children in waiting areas, this Magic Space project is the result of a first of its kind collaboration between The Blackpool Teaching Hospital, SEA LIFE Blackpool, Merlin’s Magic Wand and Dreams Come True.

"We are incredibly proud to offer this SEA LIFE-themed sensory space to the patients at The Blackpool Teaching Hospital. It represents a commitment to providing holistic attractions that provide joy, connection, and support the emotional and psychological needs of those who visit. We believe this Magic Space will significantly enhance the well-being and recovery of visitors."

Kate Shane, Regional Director, Blackpool Cluster, Merlin Entertainments

Aimed at enhancing patient care and overall hospital experience for children, the SEA LIFE themed sensory space features a variety of interactive and calming elements inspired by the underwater world. Children can enjoy the sights of the ocean, with installations including hanging jellyfish, bubble tubes, aquatic-themed artwork, and tactile panels designed to stimulate the senses. This serene environment is particularly beneficial for paediatric patients, individuals with sensory processing disorders, and those needing a tranquil space to relax and de-stress.

"We are delighted to partner with Blackpool Teaching Hospitals and Dreams Come True on our 54th Magic Space project. Our goal is always to create magical experiences for children who need them most. We're confident that bringing the wonders of the ocean-themed attraction to those who might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience it firsthand and creating a soothing and enchanting space for healing does just that, and we hope that the space makes a positive impact for children and families for years to come."

Erin Scoular, Charity Manager, Merlin’s Magic Wand

“We are delighted to have partnered with Merlin’s Magic Wand to have created this magical space; it will be a welcome distraction from the anxiety of visiting hospital, putting children at ease and inspiring their creativity and imagination. Across the UK, 29% of children currently live in poverty, however in Blackpool this rises to a staggering 38%. We are therefore delighted to be delivering such a vital dream where the need for our charity is so great and are proud to co-fund this incredible transformation. It is sure to have a lasting impact, bringing smiles to the thousands of children and families who will walk through these doors. A big thank you to all the volunteers who take part in making this dream come true and for all the gift in kind donations that have made this dream so magical.”

Lisa King, OBE, Chief Executive of Dreams Come True

The project was made possible through the generous support of volunteers from SEA LIFE Blackpool, and Merlin Entertainments Blackpool suppliers.

The Magic Space launched on Tuesday, June 4th, 2024, with beneficiary children and their families, and representatives from SEA LIFE Blackpool, Merlin’s Magic Wand, Dreams Come True and hospital staff who have been instrumental in bringing this project to life.
