An update from Changfeng Ocean World
Hear from James Burleigh – Chief Ambassador for SEA LIFE
Staff at Changfeng Ocean World in Shanghai, and their Merlin colleagues worldwide, were devastated recently by the sudden death of 17-year-old Jun Jun, eldest of the three Beluga whales which had been resident at Changfeng since 2003.
We had hoped that Jun Jun would soon be enjoying the relative freedom of the world’s first Beluga whale retirement sanctuary in a large natural sea inlet in the Icelandic Westman Islands, along with her younger companions Little White and Little Grey.
Sadly this will no longer be the case, but this tragedy has served to strengthen our determination to continue to progress that development as speedily as we can, in the hope that Little White and Little Grey can enjoy much longer and healthier lives in more natural surrounds closer to their native Arctic range.
